After you have completed the adoption process in China you will need to obtain a Visa for your child to come to the UK. The Visa can be obtained from the British Embassy in Beijing. If the child lives within the Shanghai, Zhejiang or Jiangsu provinces, the Visa can be obtained from the British Consulate in Shanghai. If the child lives within the Guanxi, Guangdong or Fujian provinces, the Visa can be obtained from the British Consulate in Guangzhou. The Home Office leaflet "Intercountry Adoption" explains how to obtain the Visa. The British Embassy in Beijing has suggested that to help speed up the process you may wish to contact Jane Chapman to advise them when you will be travelling to China. The Embassy does not offer specific appointment times but they will confirm whether they will see you either in the morning or afternoon. The Embassy treats adoption cases as a priority but it is likely there will be people in the queue in front of you. If you choose not to make an appointment you should aim to arrive at the British Embassy in Beijing between the hours of 08.30 and 10.00 to submit the Entry Clearance Application. You will not need to take your child with you. On arrival at the Embassy you will be given a number and will have to wait your turn. If the entry clearance officer is satisfied that a visa can be issued it will be ready for collection between 16.00 and 17.00 the same day. Please remember when contacting Beijing that the time difference between the UK and Beijing is +8 hours. In the summertime the difference is +7 hours. The documents the British Embassy will need to see are: your passports, documents verifying your financial situation and accommodation in the UK, your child's passport and all the adoption documents. The Home Office IND leaflet 'Intercountry Adoption' explains the process and you are advise to refer to it beforehand. You will be required to pay the entry clearance fee when you apply for the visa on behalf of your child.
